With the engine light on, the glow plug light would not come on at all after it set the code. There were other codes for the glow plug circuits, but I only concentrated on the main code (U0106 -lost communication with glow plug control module). I used my Snap On Solus Pro scanner and was able to check the code and operation of the control module.

I believe there is a procedure for reset and relearn. If you have a bidirectional scan tool, you should be able to activate it through the tool.
