Johnson outboard timing adjustment.
Hi. I have a 1985 Johnson 100 hp commercial outboard. The model number is J100WMLCOC. I cannot find the wot timing spec anywhere. I have looked many times on the net and here with no luck. What I am seeing is cranking at wot with the timer base rubber stop hitting it's stop is 21 degrees. Of course at wot this should equate to 25 degrees.
Put a timing light on #1, and place the timing linkage in idle position. Crank the engine, and note the reading. Should be around 4*ATDC. While the engine is cranking, move the linkage manually, watching the timing move using the timing light. It will move on the flywheel toward that 18* mark.2000 Johnson 90Hp. To set the timing on that engine, have the s/plugs out, and have the throttle at full, set that timer base under the flywheel tight against the rubber stop on the end of the full spark timer advance stop screw (wire it against that stop if necessary). Rig up a spark tester on the #1 cylinder plug wire. Hook up the timing light to the #1 plug wire.Remove the s/plugs. Rig up a spark tester so that you can connect a timer light to #1 cylinder. Set the throttle to full throttle, full spark advance. Have the timer base pressing on that rubber stop. Spin the prop if need be if the engine is going into forward gear so that the dog and gear lobes mesh properly.
Jun 13, 2016. #3. There is a screw on the portside of the motor which controls the idle. You firstly have to make sure that your cable puls the throttle all the way back. If this does not happen you have to adjust your cables. Another problem can be that the roller of the carb hits the cam to soon. This also increases the idle rpm.Jun 20, 2019 · New member. It appears that on my 1993 Johnson 25hp, one has to set the Joe Reeves method at 0 degrees off the factory specified maximum spark advance. I will re-set it with the Joe Reeves Method tomorrow to 30 degrees, that is, the Joe Reeves Method but minus 0 degrees. The pointer is called a timing fixture but it is really a tool to adjust the ignition to fire as close as possible to 180 degrees apart. Any kind of a tool would work as long as it was straight and fasten to the crankshaft If you set one set of points you could put the pointer between the marks.
