VE psycasts does a decent job self balancing, because raiders can have the casts as well. The problem just becomes that the player's casters are more intelligently leveled and utilized so once you reach a certain point, the raids just cannot keep up. Psylevels also don't seem to add the right amount of colony wealth. Soon after VE psycasts dropped I started a psyfocus colony with the new storyteller. So far I’ve been loving it. My best psycaster and leader, reed, is level 9 and has unlocked a portion of the chronopath and archon paths, along with thunderbolt from the staticlord path. The new psycasts are incredibly fun, both in terms of unlocking and casting. It does cost 62% psyfocus or something like that, so it's not completely spammable, but if you're quick and play it smart it should be plenty. Lots of other good Psycasts in that same tree (Protector I believe), stabilize is super nice as a safety net, skip shield is a pocket lew-shield pack you can deploy a short range away, etc.
