I have my mesh node about 35’ and 1 floor above my main router. I also use wireless backhaul and have no issues. You might want to try experimenting with different locations for the mesh node unit. My RSSI usually runs around -65 dBm.
I was ripping my hair out with the new XT8 constantly switching to the 2.4ghz backhaul even though the node is just one bedroom away. This comment here fixed it. No issues now after close to 36 hours of use. Steps: go to Wireless > Professional select 5Ghz-2 for Band under roaming assistant select "disable" click "apply" and reboot the node

TL;DR: Remove all connected Ethernet cables that are connected to the router node except for the WAN one, connect your disconnected node with an Ethernet cable to your router (it should be connected to your node in the WAN port and on your router to the LAN port).
