Mameluke tier has some great skirmishers. Master archers are decent. Palace guards are hard to train but they are versatile. Not the best troop tree but nice and reliable backups. Javelins are very good in Bannerlord and most of your infantry get them. They melt opposition as long as they don't have a shield.

Pure shield infantry is Sturgian line depending on preference for spear or throwables/axes. Infantry with maces may do better vs t5+ and the Aserai Veteran infantry shreds t4 down, but the sturgians do both with little compromise on top of one of the best shields. The thing is the veteran crossbowmen seem to have nearly as good of defense with the shields and way better lethality with the brutal crossbows. And of course banner knights are banner knights. Is it worth having 20% of my army as infantry or really just keep it to Cav and crossbows? Noble troops do not appear with enough consistency or numbers in the base game to make them a core part of an army. Which means that creating a theme or gameplay feel for a culture's army relies almost entirely on their basic troops. Noble lines just add some exciting spice to the dish. Aserai, Vlandians, Empire, and Khuzait all get noble lines ... It seems that best way to use companion parties is to keep them in your army 100% of the time.
