Great column. The main disadvantage for me of the Total Bond Fund Index (VBTLX) is that it often underperforms other Vanguard intermediate bond funds. So I have a mix of short and interemdiate bond funds so that if one category takes a dive, the others may not and can be used for RMD purposes (all are in my IRA).
