There is a bug at the moment which means that if you dual wield hand crossbows, it applies your Dex ability modifier to the damage of both hand crossbows i.e. including the off-hand crossbow, even without the Two Weapon Fighting style, which it really shouldn't. but i used mine mainly for ranged dmg, went with assassin to lvl 5 and rest into gloomstalker ranger with dual hand crossbows and hes pumping out some good dmg. in act 3 you can get the bes melee weapon for dex users, a rapier that can use a bonus action to hit again if you want to go the other subclass that gives you another bonus action.
