If tModLoader doesn't work, of course check for the ports 7777 to be opened assuming your using the default port. The mods should auto download and enable/disable when attempting to join a server, but Tmodloader usually crashes when entering. But, as long as they try again after it crashes straight away, they should join with no problems.

To anyone wanting to use tModLoader x64, I've found a relatively simple solution. Download the latest version of TML x64 on github and use in conjunction with a cracked version of GoG Terraria.
