i have an lq4 with flat top pistons essentially making it an lq9. Put a cam in, milled the heads and had a shop test it at close to 10:1 compression if I remember correctly. If youre going FI id suggest to start with lq4 as youll have lower compression than lq9 and will have an iron block, or at least all gen iii are.

First off theres the Gen III and Gen IV, theres a couple small differences and I'll start with the gen III 97-04/05. Gen III engines include the LS1 (ally 5.7), LS6 (ally 5.7 HO), LM7 (iron 5.3), LR4 (iron 4.8 ) and the LQ4/9 that you know about. Theres an ssr ally 5.3 too but i don't know designation. Ls1/6 have gun drilled cranks afaik.
