Yes, I've seen the vacuum pumps fail, and when they do they usually break the drive tangs off, those tangs engage into the exhaust camshaft. You usually need a camshaft and a new pump.

The 2018 and 2019 models do not have that problem due to Chevy making the pistons reinforced for the 2018 and 19 models.
