Tivo remote not working with new batteries.
We've got a strange answer for this, but it's the right one almost every time: IR interference. For some reason, TiVos are unusually susceptible to other IR waves. So other remotes, IR blasters, and other products can cause this behavior. Half the time, there's a remote jammed under a couch cushion with a button stuck down.

I have the Samsung surround sound bar connected to the HDMI ARC port and the Samsung TV controls it, so either the Tivo remote or the TV's control it. The Tivo remote only controls power, volume, mute and input functions and I did not program in the sound bar remote.All TiVo's (and Mini's) can see all TiVo remotes in IR mode. Then, once you can get into the menu on your Mini, you can pair the remote with the Mini in RF (Radio Frequency) mode. There is a good chance your current remote will still work in IR mode. I haven't taken a Tivo remote apart yet, but if you're gentle with it, you should be able to snap it open. Pay attention to how it all fits together in there, and of course leave the batteries out. Or find a Circuit City that's closing, they probably have new remotes for cheap, ours does. Or Ebay - lots of remotes there.
